Double My Trouble

We hadn't been here but a few months and a neighbor asked me if I would make his wife a double wedding ring for her birthday...I, being ignorant, said sure! I found the fabric in November, cut out and pieced in December, put it together in January, sent it off in Feb, but didn't get it back until end of May...her birthday was beginning of May. Anyway, whatever possessed me to think I could make such a difficult quilt - I didn't even know how to make one - but being during the holidays and not having a clue what I was doing and being on what seemed like such a short time schedule - I really should be questioning my judgement. I was never so sick of looking at fabric - it was my every waking moment on that quilt. I also realized, I WAY, WAY undercharged him. That said, I have to say, the quilt came out beautiful! I literally cried when he came to pick it up - my husband asked me if I could come up with some excuse that it got ruined or something. No, I don't have a double wedding ring on my bed...yet

I know exactly how you felt. I did the same thing with one that my brother's girlfriend's (now wife) wanted me to make for a wedding gift for "her" friend. I spent days upon days working on it and even had my children ironing! It was horrible! She kept telling me to keep track of my hours. Well, you know that at some point those went out the window. I told them it would be $350. They were furious! Keep in mind that they make an insane amount of money. Not only did they not ever thank me for the quilt, they never paid me for it. They thought it would cost $100. They didn't give me that either. My brother never did figure out why I was mad and that is when I made quilts for a living so I lost an entire months worth of work which I couldn't afford to do.
Your quilt is amazing and it is by far the hardest quilt I have ever made. They are a lot of work. No matter what you got paid I know it wasn't enough. I'm quite sure that the person who received the quilt is thrilled beyond words.
I did make another one several years later for my daughters wedding quilt but I had help form friends. We had a couple sewing days and ran it like a sweat shop.
I think I spent $150 in fabric, backing, batting, thread, etc...and probably the same in the quilting...he paid me $300 so needless to say, I made $0. He thanks me to this day, his wife has never said a word...oh well...I don't think people realize just how much time and work can go into a quilt...that's why "we" appreciate them I think.
It is such a wonderful quilt. It is MY favorite color you know!!! I don't have a double wedding ring either because I have always been too nervous to try one. Maybe one of these days after the kids are gone...you know when I have free time! LMAO!
Oh Chris you are so funny. When the kids are gone and you have time.....I believe you only have "time" when you "are" a kid. When was the last time you said, "I'm bored."
To make a double wedding ring quilt you have to be naive and not know what you are getting yourself into.
